As Biografias no Pensamento Português 
dos séculos XIX-XX, 

por ocasião dos 80 anos da publicação de São Paulo
de Teixeira de Pascoaes.

O Instituto de Ciências da Cultura Pe. Manuel Antunes, em parceria com o CLEPUL – Centro de Literaturas e Culturas Lusófonas e Europeias da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa –, a Câmara Municipal de Amarante, a  Biblioteca Nacional, a Casa da Liberdade - Mário Cesariny e outras ilustres instituições, encontram-se a organizar um evento dedicado a Teixeira de Pascoaes. Tal evento compreenderá três momentos, consubstanciados em Congressos Internacionais: As Biografias no Pensamento Português dos séculos XIX-XX, por ocasião dos 80 anos da publicação de São Paulo de Teixeira de Pascoaes, nos dias 29, 30 e 31 de Outubro de 2014; a celebração do Centenário da publicação da Arte de Ser Português em Outubro de 2015; e Teixeira de Pascoaes: Pensamento e Missão. Congresso comemorativo dos 140 anos do seu nascimento e 65 da sua morte em Março de 2017.

Dando prossecução ao primeiro evento, atesta-se pelo género literário das biografias, na terceira década do século XX, e, neste caso, pela prosa poética de Teixeira de Pascoaes, a demarcada índole ficcionada e filosófica, ainda que o tom se torne não poucas vezes romanesco, deste anúncio radical de variação de rumo formal do nosso pensador, sendo um coerente prolongamento dos princípios teoréticos fundamentais da sua obra.

Torna-se inobliterável que, no alvorecer do século XXI, a biografia desfruta, entre os géneros discursivos presentes, de um acentuar histórico-antropológico, a que a filosofia e a teoria literária não são estranhas, quer pela reflexão acerca da presença e do uso narratológico de sujeitos individuais, quer pelo poder reflexivo desse imaginário historiográfico e arquetipal que, ainda que não elidindo as barreiras cronológicas, permite atender à conexão necessária entre o ser humano, o mundo e a vida, sem cair em encapsulamentos formais e estranguladores.

   

No panorama internacional este género memorialista sempre gozou da ampla difusão e aceitação, bastando evocar o magnum opus de Santo Agostinho, Confissões, relembrar os Essais de Montaigne e restringindo a exegese destacar-se-iam a emergência e difusão das filosofias de Schopenhauer e de Nietzsche; da teoria do inconsciente em Jung e das revisões do positivismo. O romper de certas normas e premissas de objectividade torna o género biográfico lente privilegiada, ainda que complexa, de análise e reflexão do sujeito individual.

Biographies in the Portuguese Thought of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries,

on the occasion of the 80^th anniversary of the publication of Teixeira de Pascoaes’ São Paulo.

The Institute for Cultural Sciences Pe. Manuel Antunes, in partnership with CLEPUL – Centre for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures of the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon –,  the Amarante Municipal Council, the National Library, the House of Liberty - Mário de Cesariny, andalongside other illustrious institutions, are now organizing an event dedicated to Teixeira de Pascoaes. This will encompass three phases, materializing in the following International Congresses: Biographies in the Portuguese Thought of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, on the occasion of the 80^th anniversary of the publication of Teixeira de Pascoaes’ São Paulo, on 29, 30 and 31 of October, 2014; the celebration of the Centenary of the publication of Arte de Ser Português on October 2015;and Teixeira de Pascoaes: Thought and Mission. Commemorative Congress of the 140 years of his birth and the 65 years of his death, on March 2017.

The first phase is centered in biography as a literary genre in the third decade of the twentieth century, focusing in the poetic prose of Teixeira de Pascoaes, strongly marked by fiction and philosophy, almost in a Romanesque style, whileembodying a coherent extension of the theoretical foundations of his work.

We cannot ignore the historical-anthropologic importance the biography genre currently enjoys in the dawn of the twenty-first century in different discursive types, where philosophy and literary theory aren’t too far away, either due to the presence and narrative use of individual subjects, or by the reflexive power of this historiographical and archetypal imaginary. Not ignoring chronological barriers, it allows attending to the necessary connection between the individual, the world, and life itself, without falling for formal and limiting characterizations.

In the international landscape, this memorial genre has always enjoyed a broad dissemination and acceptance, with the exemplarycases of Saint Augustine’s magnum opus, Confessions, Montaigne’s Essais, and even with the emergence and influence of the ideas of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, Jung’s theory of the unconscious, and the criticisms of positivism. The transgression of certain rules and assumptions regarding objectivity turns the biography genre a privileged yet complex perspective on the analysis and reflection of the individual subject.
